What is a condensing boiler?

A condensing boiler can provide increased efficiency when compared to traditional boilers. It achieves this by extracting heat from flue gases which would otherwise be wasted. Given that these gases can reach around 180°C this is a big improvement and can provide an energy efficiency of 87% compared to traditional boilers which can reach around 75%.

With a condensing boiler, the heat rises upwards through the primary heat exchanger, and then is diverted over a secondary heat exchanger. These can reduce the flue gas temperature to about 55°C and enables the water vapour to condense and be collected. The remaining gases are then expelled through a fan-assisted balanced flue.

It is only possible for a condensing boiler to provide these very high efficiencies if the flow and return pipe work below 55°C, and so having it installed by a properly qualified engineer is essential and annual maintenance is advisable.

Service your existing boiler

British Gas engineers are recognised as the experts and so there is no better choice to service your existing boiler. Most boiler manufacturers agree that you should do this once a year. During the service visit the engineer will perform the following safety checks.

  • Check the gas pressure to ensure the boiler is operating at the correct pressure
  • Check that there are no unsafe emissions from the boiler with a flue test
  • Inspect your boiler and controls to make sure they are operating safely
  • Leave a HomeCare checklist with you with information about boiler safety
  • Visually inspect the boiler to check for corrosion and leaks

All from £6.61 a month
